What is alopecia? First let us understand that there a various types of alopecia, and various causes of female hair loss associated with this condition. Here are the different types of alopecia.
Alopecia Areata: Mostly temporary it usually starts in a small area of the scalp, but can move to other parts of the body including eyebrows, etc. Cause is officially unknown. Number one suspect? Stress!
Alopecia Totalis: Hair loss is limited to the head but usually progresses, resulting in total baldness of the head.
Alopecia Universalis: Hair loss over entire body.
Traction Alopecia: is the direct result of pulling hair too tight.
*Trichotillomania: Is actually an obsessive compulsive disorder characterized by pulling hair out, though it is sometimes categorized with types of alopecia.

Traction Alopecia is the most common type of alopecia we see at LA Hair. It is a direct result of individuals, including non-professionals and some professionals providing the following services, all of which involve pulling the hair too tight over a period of time:
- Braids
- Sew in Weaves and
- Clients who wear ponytails, hair pieces and other styles where the hair is pulled tightly from the face and or gelled down.
Examples of traction alopecia:
- Susan Taylor (Editor of Essence Magazine)
- Stevie Wonder (Entertainer, singer, songwriter)
Note: Both these individuals have receding hair lines. Alopecia hair loss in women has multiplied ten fold in the last 10 years.
